Location
Except during spawn, a food source is usually the main factor in determining fish location.

Location is often determined by forage. Are fish chasing suspended schools of minnows, insects over soft bottoms, minnows in weeds, crayfish in the rocks? Try to find out what forage is present where you are fishing and let that guide you to the gamefish.

Structure is important, but fish are there for other reasons. Structure attracts food - plankton, minnows, etc. Structure also provides shade and cover.

During the spawn, fish location is determined by spawning sites. What factors determine spawning sites for your target species? Immediately before and after the spawn, fish will usually be in deeper water near the spawning sites.
